Summary

North Carolina Cyber Academy is a K-12 online school in Durham, NC, serving 2,461 students with a student-teacher ratio of 17.0. It is the second-largest alternative school in the area, behind only NC Virtual Academy, which enrolls 3,482 students. Because this is an open-enrollment cyber school, direct comparisons to in-person neighborhood schools are less useful than comparisons with other online academies.

Academically, the school shows a clear split between grade-level tests and high school exams. In elementary and middle school, math proficiency trails the state by wide margins — 6th grade math is 26 points below the state average and 8th grade math is 22 points below. Reading is much closer by middle school, with 8th grade reading essentially at the state level. High school outcomes are stronger: English II proficiency is 76.2%, more than 11 points above the state average and higher than Voyager Academy's 70.4%. Math I also beats the state average. Against NC Virtual Academy, its closest online peer, NCC posts clear advantages in Biology (53.4% vs. 37.3%), English II (76.2% vs. 55.5%), and Math III (62.1% vs. 44.9%) end-of-course exams.

The school's momentum is its most promising sign. Chronic absenteeism fell from a peak of 40.5% in 2022-2023 to 18.4% in the most recent year — now below the state average of 24.2% and far better than Ignite Online Academy's 32.8%. The graduation rate has climbed steadily from 52.3% in 2021-2022 to 78.1% in 2025-2026, nearly matching NC Virtual Academy's 79.2% and approaching the state's 88.8%. Math remains the school's clearest academic challenge across nearly every grade level. The school does not report free/reduced-price lunch data, which makes socioeconomic comparisons with Voyager Academy or Triangle Math and Science Academy difficult, but the sustained improvements are encouraging for families considering an online education option.
