North Graham Elementary in Graham, North Carolina, serves 362 students in grades PK-5 and is part of Alamance-Burlington Schools, a district ranked in the bottom third of North Carolina districts. The school itself has been ranked near the very bottom of all elementary schools statewide for the past several years, receiving 0 out of 5 stars in 2024–2025 and 2025–2026. Nearly all of its students (99.2%) come from low-income households, and proficiency rates in every tested subject and grade level are dramatically below both the district and the state.

State test results from 2025–2026 show just how wide those gaps have become. In 3rd grade, only 34.0% of students are proficient in math, compared with 56.2% across the district and 66.4% statewide; reading proficiency is even lower, at 21.3%. By 5th grade, only about 1 in 5 students is proficient in math, reading, or science. Worryingly, these results are not simply a reflection of student poverty. R Homer Andrews Elementary, located just 1.3 miles away, serves nearly the same percentage of low-income students (99.4%) and yet achieves markedly better outcomes, including 60.2% math proficiency in 3rd grade and 57.1% science proficiency in 5th grade. Other nearby high-poverty schools such as South Graham Elementary and Grove Park Elementary also outperform North Graham across most subjects and grade levels.

Chronic absenteeism is one of the most distinguishing challenges at North Graham. Rates have topped 38% in recent years and exceeded 50% in 2020–2021. Worst performing school in the district. Some good teacher's who care but not enough to make a impact. Out of 1429 NC schools number #1 being best Graham is #1383 they've implemented another old failed tactic to improve the state's F on the state's report card Uniforms and year round school with no real effect besides making it easier to identify the kids from the poorly performing school.In the city of Shelby their are schools that have good test scores gym everyday and recess and high concentrations of economically disadvantaged student's but they do better for their students to prepare them academically for Middle and High school.In my opinion they should either close down the school and disperse the students to better performing schools or fully intergrate the district so that all students have a chance at a good solid education.
