Summary

Haw River Elementary is a PK–5 school in Haw River, NC, serving about 490 students in the Alamance-Burlington Schools district. The school serves an exceptionally high-need student body — about 99% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In recent state rankings, Haw River placed in the 8th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools, a low standing that has persisted for the past decade, though it is actually the strongest relative position the school has held in that time.

One of the most distinctive patterns at Haw River shows up between 3rd and 4th grade. In the most recent test data, 3rd-grade math proficiency (53.6%) sat close to the district average of 56.2%. By 4th grade, the same group of students fell to just 22.5% proficiency in math — roughly 25 points below the district average. The state's typical 3rd-to-4th grade decline is about 5 points; Haw River's was 31. Reading tells a similar story, with a 20-point drop over the same transition. The specific falling-off grade varies from year to year, but the school has repeatedly seen stronger 3rd-grade performance followed by a sharp upper-elementary falloff. That pattern separates Haw River from nearby higher-performing schools in the same district, like South Mebane Elementary. Even R Homer Andrews Elementary, a similarly high-poverty school just over a mile away, ranks in the 26th percentile compared with Haw River's 8th.

There are some encouraging signs. English learner students at Haw River now rank in the 73rd percentile statewide, up from the 4th percentile just two years ago — the strongest subgroup outcome at the school. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 39.0% to 30.6% since 2021, though it still exceeds the state rate of 24.2%. Spending is not the issue: at $10,856 per student, Haw River outspends South Mebane Elementary ($8,634) and E M Yoder Elementary, both of which perform better academically. The English learner gains show that targeted supports can produce meaningful improvement even with very high poverty rates. Addressing the upper-elementary achievement drop and continuing to improve attendance appear to be the most urgent priorities for the school.
