Summary

Bethel Elementary is a small, rural pre-K–8 school in Bethel, NC, serving about 232 students from a community where nearly every family (98.7 percent) qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Within Pitt County Schools, Bethel ranks #986 of 1,492 elementary schools statewide — sitting in the 34th percentile with a 2-star rating. Those numbers look modest, but Bethel is clearly improving: the school has climbed 285 spots in state rankings over three years, going from the 15th percentile with a 1-star rating in 2022-23 to its current position. It now ranks ahead of every nearby Edgecombe County and Martin County school and above most Pitt County elementary schools in the immediate area.

Bethel's greatest strength is early-grade learning. In 2025-26, its 3rd-grade math proficiency hit 77.8 percent — the best among all neighboring schools in this comparison and well above the district (66.9 percent) and state (66.4 percent) averages. Fourth-grade reading was also solid at 61.9 percent. Attendance is improving, too: chronic absenteeism has dropped from 31.8 percent in 2020-21 to 20.5 percent in 2024-25, now better than the Pitt County average (21.7 percent) and far below the rates of nearby schools like Princeville Elementary or South Creek Elementary. Families will also appreciate Bethel's student-to-teacher ratio of 11.6, the lowest in the area, which means small classes.

The major concern at Bethel is what happens as students move past 4th grade. In 2025-26, 5th-grade reading proficiency fell to just 20 percent, while 8th-grade reading sat at 23.8 percent — roughly 33 points below the state average. Math follows a similar slide from an impressive 77.8 percent proficiency in 3rd grade down to 42.9 percent by 8th grade. Compare that with Stokes, a similar-size, similarly high-poverty PK–8 school in the same district that ranks in the 57th percentile and posts markedly stronger results in grades 5–8 despite higher absenteeism. Bethel's rising rank, improving attendance, and early-grade success offer genuine hope; carrying that momentum through the middle grades is what will determine whether its turnaround becomes lasting.
