Middle Schools in Franklin County Schools

The four middle schools in Franklin County Schools serve grades 6–8 and enroll about 1,782 students. All four schools — Bunn Middle, Cedar Creek Middle, Terrell Lane Middle, and Franklinton Middle — serve high-poverty communities, with free/reduced lunch eligibility nearly identical across schools, between 98.7% and 99.4%. Since poverty levels are essentially the same, the dramatic differences in academic outcomes point to real school-level differences in instruction, climate, and support.

Cedar Creek Middle is the district's standout performer, ranking 287th of 778 North Carolina middle schools (63rd percentile) with overall EOG proficiency near 61%, above both the district average of 49% and the state average of roughly 58%. Cedar Creek has climbed steadily from the 42nd to the 63rd percentile over three years. Franklinton Middle is the smallest school and posts excellent 8th-grade results, with science proficiency of 63.5% that rivals Cedar Creek and 8th-grade math above the state average. Bunn Middle has the best attendance in the district but still ranks in the 24th percentile, while Terrell Lane Middle ranks lowest at the 15th percentile and trails district averages in every subject.

Two patterns stand out. First, math proficiency drops sharply from 6th to 7th grade at nearly every school — at Bunn Middle, math falls from 55% to 32%, and at Terrell Lane from 46% to 27%. Only Cedar Creek sustains strong math performance through all three grades, making middle-school math the district's clearest challenge. Second, resources do not automatically drive results: Franklinton spends the most per student and has the lowest student–teacher ratio, yet it does not outperform Cedar Creek, which spends less. Chronic absenteeism is also uneven, affecting more than one in three students at Franklinton and nearly one in three at Terrell Lane. For families, Cedar Creek is the strongest overall choice, while Franklinton offers a resource-rich alternative with notable 8th-grade STEM strengths.
