Jefferson County Middle School

Jefferson County Middle School serves 240 students in grades 6–8 in Fayette, a small town in southwestern Mississippi, and is part of the Jefferson County School District. Nearly all students (98.75%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the school maintains a 12.6-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Despite the high poverty rate, chronic absenteeism is just 16.0% — well below the state average of 23.9% and far better than Port Gibson Middle School (30.7%) or Franklin Middle School (22.9%).

The school is clearly heading in the right direction. After a 0-star rating in 2024–2025, Jefferson County Middle School jumped to a 1-star rating and moved from the 9th to the 25th percentile in a single year. Much of that momentum comes from 8th grade, where the school posted the highest math (42.1%) and science (65.8%) proficiency among all nearby middle schools — with science topping the state average by 8 points. The 8th-grade math score surged by 23 points in one year, and advanced math students posted an outstanding 88.9% proficiency rate in Algebra I. These results show that students at Jefferson County are capable of high-level work.

The main challenge is 7th grade, where ELA proficiency sits at 17.0% and math at 24.6% — both far below state averages. Even with recent gains, most grade-level scores remain below Mississippi statewide proficiency rates. Still, Jefferson County Middle School outperforms its closest comparable peer, Port Gibson Middle School, in nearly every subject and grade. The key opportunity ahead is to translate its impressive 8th-grade success into consistent gains across all grades, especially 7th grade.
