Kirkpatrick Health & Wellness Magnet School

Kirkpatrick Health and Wellness Magnet School is an elementary school in Clarksdale, Mississippi, serving 266 students in grades PK–4 as part of the Clarksdale Municipal School District. Nearly all of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet the school has shown meaningful improvement, climbing from the 3rd percentile of Mississippi elementary schools in 2023-24 to the 13th percentile in the most recent ranking.

Kirkpatrick is the highest-performing of the three Clarksdale Municipal magnet elementary schools. It outpaces George H. Oliver Visual/Performing Arts Magnet School and Booker T. Washington International Studies Magnet School in most subjects, including 3rd grade ELA and math, and 4th grade math. The school's chronic absenteeism rate has also fallen dramatically — from 49% in 2020-21 to 23.6% in 2023-24 — matching the state average and far better than the district's 38.9%. A standout strength is 4th grade math, where 42.2% of students scored proficient, well above the 8.8% posted by the neighboring Clarksdale Collegiate Public Charter School — a notable reversal of the usual charter-vs.-public assumptions — and only about 9 points below the state average.

Despite these gains, literacy remains the school's biggest challenge. Only about 24% of 3rd and 4th graders are proficient in ELA, less than half the state average. Kirkpatrick also still trails several nearby rural elementary schools serving similar high-poverty populations, including Quitman County Elementary and Casper E Hall, which post stronger rankings and higher math proficiency. While the school's direction is positive — with improving attendance and rising math scores — sustained progress in literacy will be essential to close the gap with its higher-performing neighbors.
