Summary:

The Alcorn School District in Mississippi is home to two middle schools — Kossuth Middle School and Alcorn Central Middle School — which together serve grades 5 through 8 in the Corinth and Glen area, within a district ranked 26th out of 134 districts statewide (81st percentile, 4 stars).

The clear standout is Alcorn Central Middle School, which has outranked Kossuth every year and maintained a 4-star rating throughout, placing in the 75th-79th percentile statewide. It posts higher average proficiency in both ELA (48.2% vs. 44.3%) and math (54.7% vs. 48.6%) in the most recent year — and it does so while serving a higher-poverty student body (69.5% free/reduced lunch vs. 59.9%). Kossuth Middle School's strength, meanwhile, is science: it posted 73% proficiency in both 5th and 8th grade science, well above district and state averages and far ahead of Alcorn Central's 62.3% and 59.6%. However, Kossuth's statewide rank has slipped from 69th to 101st over three years, and it is now the only one of the two to fall to 3 stars.

Several metrics help explain the gap. Kossuth's ELA average fell from 48.7% to 44.3% and math from 58.0% to 48.6%, with especially striking drops in 6th grade — ELA down to 32.2% and math down to 29.7%. By contrast, Alcorn Central's 6th grade math proficiency is 59.0% and its 7th grade math is 71.4%, making its middle-level math instruction a clear bright spot. Attendance is healthy at both schools, with chronic absenteeism at 13.9% for Kossuth and 15.9% for Alcorn Central, both well below the state rate of 23.9%. The competitive gap has widened from 14 ranks to 36 ranks, and Kossuth may need targeted support in core subjects to reverse its decline.
