Summary

Wheaton Secondary is a public school in Wheaton, Minnesota, serving about 175 students in grades 6 through 12 as part of the Wheaton Area Public School District in rural western Minnesota. Its state ranking has fallen sharply in recent years: after reaching 4 stars at the 79th and 78th percentiles in 2020–21 and 2021–22, and 3 stars at the 54th–59th percentiles through 2024–25, the school dropped to 1 star at the 25th percentile in 2025–26 (356th of 473 schools).

Wheaton's clearest strength is helping students finish high school. Its graduation rate was 96.1% in 2024–25, 96.4% in 2023–24, and 96.3% in 2022–23, all well above the state's roughly 83–85%, and its dropout rate was 0.0% in each of those years, compared with 4.2–4.5% statewide. Those outcomes beat nearby schools: 6-12th Grade Building in Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley posted 87.5%, and Herman-Norcross High School 80.0%. About 40.57% of Wheaton students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25 — more than at either comparison school — and the student–teacher ratio improved to 11.6.

Test scores are the weaker side of the picture. On 2025–26 state tests, Wheaton was below the state in math (23.4% vs 44.9%), reading (35.5% vs 48.6%), and science (16.3% vs 25.5%); science fell from 44.44% proficient in 2022–23, when it topped the state. Grade-level results point to middle-school math and reading and high-school math as particular concerns — 8th grade math was 14.8% and 11th grade math 12.5%. Among nearby schools, Wheaton's math score was higher than the 6-12th Grade Building (17.1%) and Herman-Norcross (10.5%), while reading and science were close to the 6-12th Grade Building and above Herman-Norcross. Subgroup rankings were low across student groups. Because the comparison schools are small and many Herman-Norcross scores are suppressed by the state, these comparisons should be read cautiously.
