Waseca Area Learning Center

Waseca Area Learning Center is a small alternative school in Waseca, Minnesota, serving grades 7–12 with about 65 students — roughly 11 per grade — within the Waseca Public School District. It shares its building with SW Metro Waseca-Transitions, a 12-student transition program, and enrolls a distinctly higher-need population than the district's comprehensive high school: 70.77% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, nearly double the 36.4% at Waseca Senior High about a mile away.

Reported academic proficiency sits at or near the floor. For 2025-26, Waseca Area Learning Center reported 0% proficiency in math and 0% in reading, with science at 5.6% — below every comparison school, including other alternative programs such as CHOICE Technical Academy and Owatonna Alternative Learning Center 9-12. Statewide, the school has never ranked above the 47th percentile in ten reported years and finished 465th of 473 schools (2nd percentile, 0 stars) in 2025-26. A jump to the 25th percentile in 2023-24 did not persist. In short, this small program appears to be getting better at keeping students enrolled; getting them to proficiency and across the graduation finish line is the unresolved challenge.
