Summary

Madison Elementary is a PK–5 neighborhood school at 2850 10th Street N on the north side of Saint Cloud, MN, serving 704 students as part of the St. Cloud Public School District. It is a high-poverty school, with 68.89% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch in 2024-2025 — down from 78.24% the year before, a one-year shift that can reflect demographic or reporting changes as much as real changes in student need. Madison has ranked in Minnesota's bottom quartile for a decade, but it has drifted slowly upward, moving from roughly the 9th–13th percentile band in 2015–2019 into the 16th–23rd percentile band since 2020.

Madison's clearest strength is that it outperforms its own district in all three subjects: 29.8% math, 33.6% reading, and 17.6% science, against district averages of 24.9%, 31%, and 14.8%. Among St. Cloud elementaries it is effectively the second-strongest performer — essentially tied with Oak Hill Community Elementary on math but ahead on reading and science, and well above Discovery Community Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Talahi Community Elementary. The two closest schools geographically are a mixed picture: Success Academy St. Cloud Elementary posts 13.3% math and 0% science, while Saint Cloud Math and Science Academy is nearer Madison's level. Madison's student-teacher ratio also improved sharply, from 19.2 in 2022-23 to 13.6 in 2024-25 — better than Westwood Elementary and Oak Hill.

Two trends are worth watching. Science has fallen from 32.18% to 17.6% across four years, the steepest decline of any subject, and math slips from 38.5% in 3rd grade to 21.8% in 5th, even as reading holds roughly steady. Special education students (16th percentile) and English language learners (21st percentile) remain groups to monitor. Overall, Madison does better than its district, better than most of its immediate neighbors, and better than its poverty level would predict — while still sitting firmly in the state's bottom quartile.

Madison has a diverse population and offers a Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program teaching students the cirriculum in Mandarin Chinese allowing students to learn to read, write and speak fluently in Mandarin while retaining English as their primary language. This program has raised the bar for test results and the school is in high demand in the area. Similarly, ISD 742 offers Spanish Immersion at its Clearview School. Close Quote
