Mahnomen Secondary is a grades 7–12 school in Mahnomen, Minnesota, serving 312 students as part of the Mahnomen Public School District, where about 69.87% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025, a sign of significant economic need. In 2025–2026 the school ranked 383rd of 473 Minnesota high schools (19th percentile, 1 star), placing it in the bottom fifth of the state, while its district ranked 418th of 458 (9th percentile, 0 stars).

Academics are the main challenge. In 2025–2026, 10.1% of all grades tested proficient in math, 18.5% in reading, and 8.9% in science, compared with state averages of 44.9%, 48.6%, and 25.5%. Nearby Waubun Secondary outperformed it in all three subjects (24.0% math, 30.0% reading, 15.0% science). Norman County East Secondary posted lower math (4.9%) but slightly higher reading (22.7%) and science (10.7%). Science is a relative bright spot only within the district, whose average is 6.1%. Some grade levels are especially weak, including 5.8% proficiency in 7th-grade reading and 0% in 8th-grade science. These 2025–2026 results are below the school's own figures from the previous three years in every subject.

Completion is improving. The graduation rate rose from 55.8% in 2022–2023 to 75.0% in 2023–2024 and 81.2% in 2024–2025, while the dropout rate fell from 35.2% to 15.6% to 12.5%. Even so, dropout is roughly three times Minnesota's 4.2%, and graduation remains below the state's 84.9%. Waubun Secondary has a stronger profile at 90.0% graduation and 6.6% dropout, while Norman County East's most recent available data (2023–2024) showed 85.0% graduation and 15.0% dropout. The student-teacher ratio is 13.3, similar to Waubun's 12.7 but higher than Norman County East's 8.8. The school's overall rank also masks uneven results across student groups, with some groups ranking well below the school average. The Mahnomen Area Learning Center, the district's alternative program, is not directly comparable: its test scores are suppressed, meaning those results are unknown rather than zero.
