Hayfield Secondary is a combined secondary school serving grades 6–12 with 319 students in the small southeastern Minnesota community of Hayfield, part of the Hayfield Public School District.

The school has a split profile. It finishes students well: the 2024–2025 graduation rate was 97.1%, well above Minnesota's 84.9%, and the dropout rate was 0.0% against a state figure of 4.2%. Yet test results are weak. In 2025–2026, 29.2% of students were proficient in math, 35% in reading, and just 11.8% in science, compared with state averages of 44.9%, 48.6%, and 25.5%. Among nearby traditional high schools, Hayfield's math and reading beat only Austin Senior High (23.6% in math) and trail Blooming Prairie High School, Triton High School, Byron Senior High School, and Kasson-Mantorville Senior High. Science is the widest gap: Hayfield's 11.8% is the lowest among these schools, with 8th-grade science at 5.9% and high school End-of-Course science at 19%, while every comparable traditional high school scores higher.

Hayfield's ranking has slid from about the 70th percentile in 2015–2016 to the 29th percentile (1 star) in 2025–2026 — the lowest in its recent history and close to its district's rank. Two trends are worth watching. Math has climbed steadily, from 17.96% in 2022–2023 to 29.2%. Reading, however, slipped from 40.66% in 2024–2025 to 35%. A relative bright spot is the low-income student group, which ranked in the 62nd percentile statewide with 3 stars, well above the school's overall standing, even as other subgroup results fell below it. About 38.87% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the student–teacher ratio has improved to 15.1, better than most nearby high schools.

I switched my daughter from Kasson to Hayfield schools and her math and reading skills significantly improved because of the dedicated involvement of the teachers and programs available. Further, there has been less bullying and harassment within the school from both students and teachers. Kasson is a very competitive, sport-focused school where Hayfield focuses on its academics. The main reason the test scores are much lower than Kasson is because of the higher number of non-native English speaking children. Close Quote
