Austin Public School District serves roughly 5,174 students across 10 schools — four elementary, two middle, three high, and one alternative PK–12 setting — ranging from 87 students at Austin Community Learning Center to 1,485 at Austin Senior High. The district ranks 388 of 458 in Minnesota (15th percentile, 1 star), and its proficiency rates trail the state in every tested subject. Poverty is high across the area: free/reduced lunch eligibility runs from 36.04% at Austin Online Academy to 72.09% at Sumner Elementary, with a district rate near 59%.

Southgate Elementary is the clear elementary standout, earning 2 stars and the district's highest elementary percentile (40th), with all-grade math at 46.5% — slightly above the state's 44.9% — and reading at 44.9%; it improved from the 26th percentile a year earlier. Neveln Elementary also gained ground, rising to the 29th percentile with 44.2% math and 36.2% reading, and has the lowest student-teacher ratio among regular elementaries at 12.6. Austin Senior High is the relative standout at the high school level: it improved to 2 stars and the 38th percentile and beats the district in 11th-grade math (23.6%), 10th-grade reading (32.9%), and end-of-course science, with all-grade science of 27.7% above both the district's 13.0% and the state's 25.5%.

Elsewhere, challenges are significant. District science sits at 13.0% against 25.5% statewide, and Ellis Middle reports just 6.1% all-grade science. Sumner Elementary has the district's highest poverty rate and lowest elementary rank (12th percentile), with reading at 22.3% and 4th-grade reading at 14.5%. Austin Area Learning Center is the lowest-ranked school (1st percentile, 0 stars), while Austin Online Academy shows solid reading (38.5%) but weak math (8.3%). Notably, no reported school-grade result meets its state benchmark. Families should weigh these schools with context: alternative and online programs serve different populations and are not directly comparable, and Austin Community Learning Center has no test or rank data listed, so its performance cannot be assessed.
