Hastings Middle School, at 1000 11th St W in Hastings, Minnesota, is the only middle school in the Hastings Public School District, serving grades 5–8 to 1,183 students in a Mississippi River town about 30 minutes southeast of the Twin Cities. In 2025-2026 it ranked 266th of 546 Minnesota schools (51st percentile, 3 stars) — essentially the state median — a long slide from 2018-2019, when it ranked 51st of 533 (90th percentile, 5 stars). The fall has flattened rather than reversed: the last four years all sit between the 51st and 61st percentile at 3 stars.

Current proficiency is below the state in every subject: math 37.7% (state 44.9%), reading 46.1% (state 48.6%), and science 16.0% (state 25.5%). Science is the sharpest and most actionable gap — a 9.5-point deficit, with 8th-grade science under 10% (state 16.7%). Grade-level results are inconsistent rather than uniformly weak: 8th-grade math (43.8%) is the only subject-grade above the state, while 7th grade trails the state by nearly 10 points in math and about 5 points in reading. Fifth grade is the strongest overall — but it is also the grade no nearby peer school serves, so all-grades totals slightly flatter the school.

Among nearby schools, Hastings is middling but does reasonably well with what it has. Its closest demographic twin, Cottage Grove Middle School (7.5 miles away, nearly identical poverty rate and class size), scores lower in every subject than Hastings.
