Coon Rapids Middle School is a grades 6–8 school in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, serving 1,295 students as part of the Anoka-Hennepin School District — one of the largest middle schools in the Twin Cities suburbs. For 2025-2026 it ranks 298th of 546 Minnesota middle schools (45th percentile, 2 stars), and its proficiency rates trail both its district and the state: 32.9% in math, 41.3% in reading and 12.3% in science.

The most striking comparison is inside its own district. Oak View Middle (95th percentile), Northdale Middle (84th), Jackson Middle (80th) and Roosevelt Middle (78th) share the same district and curriculum and all rank in the top quartile, while Coon Rapids sits at the 45th — a spread of roughly 50 percentile points. Coon Rapids also has the highest share of students from low-income families in that group, at 55.6% free/reduced lunch. Its 15.8:1 student-teacher ratio, however, is better than most nearby schools, so class size alone does not explain the results. Poverty is part of the picture but not the whole story: Osseo Middle serves a similar community and outperforms it by about 13 points in math, while Westwood Intermediate & Middle posts nearly identical scores.

Two weak spots stand out: science, where 12.3% is less than half of Northdale's or Oak View's rate (though the state's own science scores dropped sharply in the same test change), and 7th-grade reading, at 29.3% versus 47.7% in 6th grade and 46.6% in 8th. The slide is long-running rather than a one-year dip — the school ranked in the 61st–64th percentile from 2015-16 through 2018-19. Its relative strengths are in effectiveness rankings for Hispanic students, English Language Learners, Native American students and students experiencing homelessness.
