Summary

Modern Montessori Charter School is a PK–8 charter school in Champlin, Minnesota, a northwest Twin Cities suburb in the Anoka-Hennepin School District area, serving 204 students as its own single-school district. That tiny district ranks 399 of 458 Minnesota districts, and the school itself ranked 720 of 869 schools statewide in 2025-2026 — 17th percentile, one star. Its standing has slipped every year for six years, from the 34th percentile to the 17th, and it has not earned more than one star in four years. It is also the only PK–8 school in its local comparison group; the ten nearby schools it was measured against are all K–5 or PK–5 elementaries, and only the 83-student Innovation Sci & Technical Elementary is comparably small.

Academically, math is the clearest concern. Only 18.2% of students met math standards, versus 44.9% statewide and roughly 53.8% at nearby schools. The gap is concentrated in grades 5–7, where proficiency falls to 3.8%, 0%, and 10.0%; the 8th-grade figure is suppressed by the state. Grades 3 and 4 (26.9% and 32.1%) are weak but far from those lows. Reading is the relative strength: 37.3% proficient, 11.3 points below the state but the school's closest subject, and stable over four years. Science has swung widely — it exceeded the state in 2022-2023 (50.0% vs. 39.2%) and 2023-2024 (44.4% vs. 39.6%) before dropping to 16.7%, below the state's 25.5%.

Comparing nearby options is instructive. Oxbow Creek Elementary, 3.1 miles away in the same city, has a nearly identical free/reduced-lunch rate (26.84% versus 25.98%) yet scores 70.7% in math and 57.8% in reading. Several nearby schools with much higher poverty rates also outscore Modern Montessori in math. Staffing looks ordinary — 14.5 students per teacher, better than Oxbow Creek's 16.8 — though that ratio has loosened from 12.1 two years earlier. Lincoln Elementary School for Arts posts the next-lowest nearby math result at 41.0%, still more than double Modern Montessori's rate. With such small grade-level cohorts, single-year numbers bounce around, but the multi-year trend and consistent peer gap are the more dependable signals.

They do not respond to emails/phone calls. My student goes hungry everyday because they don’t allow enough time for lunch. They refused to address my concern about this for weeks. Finally they called me and yelled about how I should send softer food and cut it up into bite sized pieces.
We also had an issue with our child’s school bus driver driving away before he could sit down and he’d go flying. The bus driver also drives erratically, and my student could barley take a step off of the bus before he’d speed away. This is a major safety concern. I contacted the school and of course they didn’t get back to me. I ended up having to contact the bus company on my own. Once the woman to runs the school found out that I complained about this she called me yelling about how she doesn’t want to lose that bus driver. Really unprofessional. I am not impressed with the leadership at this school at all. Close Quote
