Summary

Athlos Leadership Academy is a PK–8 public school in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, serving 807 students and operating as its own district, which ranks 394th of 458 Minnesota districts. The school has sat in the bottom quarter of Minnesota schools for years: 16th percentile (1 star) in 2025-26, after 24th in 2024-25, 20th in 2023-24, and 14th in 2022-23. It has never exceeded the 25th percentile statewide in the years shown.

In 2025-26, proficiency was below the state in every subject: Math 19.6% vs. 44.9% state, Reading 33.2% vs. 48.6%, and Science 7.8% vs. 25.5%. Reading is the relative bright spot, peaking at 40.8% in 6th grade and 32.3% in 8th grade, while Math slips as low as 10.1% in 8th grade and 8th-grade Science is only 2.0%. Among nearby schools, only Edinbrook Elementary ranks lower overall (13th percentile), and it is the only nearby school scoring below Athlos in Science. Much higher results appear at Oxbow Creek Elementary (81st percentile), Mississippi Elementary (65th), Champlin/Brooklyn Pk Acd MathEnvSci (60th), and Woodland Elementary (48th), which is less than a mile away.

Context matters: 76.33% of Athlos students qualify for free/reduced lunch, and its student-teacher ratio of 18.3 is higher than every nearby school except Star of the North - Coon Rapids (57.1). Yet poverty alone does not explain results—Nasha Shkola Charter School has a similar 78.99% free/reduced lunch rate but 48.2% Math and 46.3% Reading proficiency. The school's subgroup results are uneven: English Language Learner students rank at the 93rd percentile (5 stars) and African American students rank above the school's overall percentile, while special education students rank at the 9th percentile (0 stars), after 2nd percentile in prior years.

Open Quote There are some outstanding teachers/professionals at the school. But the proof in the pudding is the academic quality and standardized test results generated. Unfortunately, the school is sorely lacking in terms of putting out students who can read/write, do math and other basic knowledge skills. I don't know if that is entirely the schools fault. But as a parent of multiple students in this school, it is my #1 concern. Close Quote

Open Quote Extremely negative place to be around. The systems put in place for student achievement only challenge a few in the middle, and let the high and low students coast. Everyday there are 20-30 students in ISS which is a ridiculous amount and only breeds more negativity. Many great teachers have worked there, but the administration is a joke when it comes to creating an environment of change for students. Nothing will change in this school until the office is cleaned out and new minds with new thoughts are put in place. Great idea for a school, but poor management of this school. Close Quote
