The district ranks 197 of 458 in Minnesota (57th percentile) with 3 stars, and its 2025–2026 proficiency is above the state in all three tested subjects: math 48.6 vs 44.9, reading 54.1 vs 48.6, and science 26.3 vs 25.5.

Lincoln Elementary is the district's clear standout, ranking 39 of 869 elementary schools (96th percentile, 5 stars), with math 73.2, reading 72.4, and science 57.1 — science more than double both district and state. Central Middle ranks 42 of 546 (92nd percentile, 5 stars) with reading 64.6, well ahead of Mariner Middle School at 53.2. Otter Lake Elementary (76th percentile, 4 stars) posts strong math 61.7 and reading 64.0, while Matoska International (74th percentile, 4 stars) has improved its rank every year for three years. Vadnais Heights Elementary and North Star Elementary also beat district averages.

Willow Lane Elementary is the lowest-performing traditional elementary (22nd percentile, 1 star) with math 31.3, reading 37.0, and science 12.8, while Birch Lake Elementary and Lakeaires Elementary sit near the 30th percentile. White Bear Lake Area High School pairs a 97.3 graduation rate and 0.0 dropout rate with mixed proficiency: math 43.5 is below district and state, reading 50.2 is below the district but above the state, and science 32.5 is above both at the All Grades level. White Bear Area Learning Center and White Bear Transition Plus Program are small, specialized programs whose scores are largely suppressed — unknown, not zero — and should not be compared directly with comprehensive high schools.
