Duluth Public School District serves grades 6–8 across four middle schools with a combined enrollment of 1,755 students. Two are comprehensive middle schools — Ordean East Middle School (1,037 students) and Lincoln Park Middle School (606 students) — which together hold 93.6% of the listed middle-school enrollment. The other two are far smaller Alternative Learning Center sites, Alternative Learning Center SWS Lincoln Park (65 students) and Alternative Learning Center SWS Ordean East (47 students), co-located with the comprehensive schools but serving just 6.4% of middle-schoolers between them. The district ranks 170 of 458 in Minnesota, at the 63rd percentile with 3 stars.

Ordean East is the academic standout. In 2025–2026 it ranked 68 of 546 middle schools statewide, at the 88th percentile with 4 stars, and has stayed in the 88th–90th percentile for three years. Its reading results are exceptionally strong: 64.8% all-grade proficiency, 16.2 points above the state, with every grade level ahead of Minnesota. Math (45.1%) roughly matches district and state. Lincoln Park is the improvement story: its state percentile rose from 28 to 41 and its rank improved 73 positions over two years, with gains in math, reading, and science. Still, it trails district and state averages in most measures, and 7th-grade reading (33.9%) is a clear weak spot. The two comprehensive schools are separated by 20.4 points in math and 22.6 points in reading.

The ALC sites have no reported test scores or rank history, which should not be read as evidence of weakness — comparable data simply is not available for them. Both serve higher-poverty populations (69.23% and 61.70% free/reduced lunch) and have unusual student-teacher ratios, including 73.8 at ALC Lincoln Park. Ordean East has the lowest free/reduced-lunch rate (22.37%); Lincoln Park is 54.46%. Notably, Lincoln Park's smaller student-teacher ratio (12.1 vs. 18.3) does not translate into higher scores. For science, use 8th-grade figures: Ordean East's 23.2% beats the district's 20.9% and the state's 16.7%.
