After ranking in the bottom 17% of Michigan schools in 2024-2025, Montabella jumped to the 57th percentile in 2025-2026—a leap of over 250 places that earned it a 3-star rating. This improvement is especially impressive given that over 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, a higher rate than nearby Lakeview High School (48.9%) or Chippewa Hills High School (44.1%). The school now outperforms Central Montcalm Middle High School, Vestaburg Community High School, and Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan in state rankings, while still trailing Lakeview and the specialized Early College at Montcalm Community College.

Where Montabella truly shines is in upper-grade English Language Arts. In 2025-2026, 9th and 10th graders scored 68.6% and 62.5% proficient on PSAT ELA—beating the state average and every other traditional public high school in the area. The school also shows a unique pattern of helping students improve as they advance, with 7th-grade math above state averages even as 8th-grade math lags. However, math remains a persistent challenge across all grades, with only 11.3% of 8th graders proficient versus the 33.2% state average.
