Summary

Pine Island Elementary in Comstock Park, MI, serves 379 students in grades 3-5 within the Comstock Park Public Schools district, where 57.5% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Pine Island is a solidly average-performing school in Michigan, with a state ranking that has remained remarkably stable around the 44th to 48th percentile for the past decade. Its ELA and Math scores are generally in line with state averages, but the school shows notable weaknesses in Science and Social Studies—only 33.9% of 5th graders were proficient in Science and just 13.9% in Social Studies, compared to state averages of 40% and 27.5%. This is especially striking when you look at nearby schools like Chandler Woods Charter Academy, which posted 86.4% proficiency in Science and 61.7% in Social Studies. Even North Park Montessori Academy, serving a district ranked in the 23rd percentile, outperformed Pine Island in these subjects. The school also spends a significant $18,105 per student—higher than several higher-performing neighbors like Chandler Woods ($11,885) and Belmont Elementary ($15,263)—which raises questions about resource efficiency.

On the positive side, Pine Island manages chronic absenteeism well at 17.9%, far below the state average of 27.9%, though still higher than top-performing neighbors like Chandler Woods (10.3%). The school shows a persistent gender gap, with female students ranking in the 47th percentile versus 39th for males. It performs exceptionally well with Multi-racial students (60th percentile) but struggles significantly with Special Education (13th percentile) and English Language Learners (16th percentile). A bright spot is 3rd-grade math, where 53.3% of students were proficient in 2023-2024—10 points above the state average. Students entering from Stoney Creek Elementary (grades K-2) arrive with a higher chronic absenteeism rate (24.4%), suggesting Pine Island is partially mitigating early challenges, though their impact may linger through testing years.

Open Quote Pulled my kid out of this school after 3rd grade. Her teacher had the attitude that everyone wins or no one wins so if one kid acted out in class the whole class go punished for it. My girl came home crying two times because of this. Showed that the teacher did not know how to deal with out of control kids in her class. Also believed in not challenging quick learners. State test results show how effective this approach is. I pulled my kid out of this school before she fail to far behind other school kids in the state. Close Quote
