Summary

Creative Montessori Academy is a public charter school in Southgate, MI, serving 759 students in grades PK-8, making it larger than most nearby traditional elementary schools. The school operates as its own district and has a student-teacher ratio of 18.7, which is higher than many of its neighbors.

The most striking pattern at Creative Montessori is its academic trajectory. In the early grades, proficiency rates are critically low—for example, only 7% of 3rd graders were proficient in Math in 2025-2026, compared to 42.9% statewide, and just 16.9% were proficient in ELA. However, by 7th and 8th grade, the trend reverses dramatically. In 7th grade, 46.2% of students were proficient in ELA, surpassing the state average of 38.4%, and in 8th grade, 64.4% met the college-readiness benchmark on the PSAT in ELA, nearly matching the state average. This "growth paradox" suggests the school may have a strong middle-school program, even as its elementary years lag significantly. Math remains a persistent weakness across all grades, though it improves somewhat by middle school. The school also has a chronic absenteeism rate of 33.5%, higher than the state average of 27.9% and notably higher than nearby schools like Lindemann Elementary School (17.1%) and Jefferson Elementary School (15.5%).

Comparing Creative Montessori to its immediate neighbor, Shelters Elementary School (just 0.41 miles away), reveals stark differences. In 4th grade, Shelters had 64% Math proficiency versus just 14% at Creative Montessori, despite similar free/reduced lunch rates. Creative Montessori also spends significantly less per student ($12,302) than nearby traditional public schools, which range from $15,423 to $30,683. While the school achieves comparable results to state averages by 8th grade, its K-5 performance is well below benchmarks, raising questions about whether elementary programs are adequately resourced.

Open Quote There is a lack of communication between administrators and parents. Big changes have been made the school year without letting the parents know. administrators do not take bullying seriously nor do they take it serious when there's a disruptive child in the class. Do to Construction in the building the teachers make the children stay silent for lunch in their classroom. Its very sad under the new Administration the school is just going downhill Close Quote
