Summary

Seat Pleasant Elementary is a small, high-poverty school in Capitol Heights, MD, serving 284 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district.

This school faces significant challenges. It is the lowest-performing school in its area, with state rankings in the 1st percentile for the 2025-2026 school year. Proficiency rates are extremely low—just 4.1% in Math and 13% in ELA—far below the district averages of 13.7% and 38.9%, respectively. For comparison, the nearby Capitol Heights Elementary achieves 46.5% in Math and 68.1% in ELA. A major factor is chronic absenteeism, which sits at a critical 52.5%, nearly double the district average and the highest among all nearby schools. This creates a vicious cycle: students who miss class cannot learn, and the school struggles to build academic momentum. Despite spending a very high $31,455 per student—the second-highest in the comparison group—the school has not been able to convert this investment into improved outcomes, and performance has actually declined over the past few years.

There are also notable internal disparities. Subgroup data reveals a severe gender achievement gap, with male students ranking in the 3rd percentile statewide compared to female students in the 32nd percentile, suggesting the school's environment may not be meeting the needs of its boys. On a slightly positive note, 4th-grade ELA proficiency (15.2%) is a bit higher than 3rd-grade (13.6%), but this progress is not sustained into 5th grade, where rates drop to 9.1%. The school's high poverty rate (95.77% free/reduced lunch) is a major factor, but other schools in the district with similar demographics, like Cora L. Rice Elementary, achieve better results, pointing to school-level issues that need to be addressed.

Open Quote Sad to see this school decline. This use to be a model school in PGCPS. Unfortunately because of that the principals are promoted. Give the school some time as this was just the second year with a new principal. Also there were new teachers and other staff brought into the building. Close Quote
