Carmody Hills Elementary

Summary:

Carmody Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Capitol Heights, Maryland, serving 443 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 21 out of 24 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carmody Hills Elementary faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly African American (63.21%) and Hispanic (33.86%), and a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (72.46% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch). The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Maryland elementary schools, with a 0 or 1 out of 5 stars rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lowest-performing schools in the state. Carmody Hills students significantly underperform the state and district averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 8.5% of Carmody Hills students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 23.3% at the state level and 10.7% in the district.

While the nearby Highland Park Elementary and Capitol Heights Elementary show a wide range of performance, with Capitol Heights significantly outperforming Carmody Hills, the low performance of Carmody Hills is not solely due to district or geographic factors. The school's challenges appear to be specific to its own needs, and the high per-student spending suggests that the issues may not be solely due to a lack of funding, but rather a need for more targeted interventions and support to address the specific needs of the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote During a conversation with the teacher and counselor, I was informed in May 2018, that my child had not been doing any "in-school" work for 90 days. My question was how do you allow a student to not do "in-school work" for 90 days and do not notify the parent? I was also informed that teachers are looking at television while school is in session. The teachers are barely there and most of the times students have substitute teachers. I feel that my child was set up for failure. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
