Summary

Judith P. Hoyer Montessori is a public PK-8 magnet school in Landover, MD, serving 361 students within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, and it stands out as a high-performing option in an area where many nearby schools struggle.

This school’s academic performance is a major draw, especially in English Language Arts (ELA), where 61.3% of all students were proficient in 2025-2026—far above the district average of 38.9% and the state average of 51.7%. This is dramatically higher than nearby schools like Highland Park Elementary and Carmody Hills Elementary, both at 17.3% proficiency. In upper-grade math, the Montessori approach shines: 45.5% of 6th graders were proficient in math, compared to just 10.9% in the district, and 8th-grade math proficiency (28%) is nearly three times the state average (9.6%). The school also excels at serving all students, ranking in the 68th percentile for male students and the 64th percentile for low socio-economic status students statewide, showing it effectively closes achievement gaps.

Another standout feature is the school’s exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 7.5% in 2023-2024, compared to the district average of 32.7%. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Seat Pleasant Elementary (52.5%) and Robert R. Gray Elementary (45.5%), suggesting a highly engaged student body and strong school culture. While science scores in 8th grade (12% proficiency) lag behind the state average (30.9%), the school’s consistent upward trend—from the 32nd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 60th percentile in 2025-2026—indicates effective leadership and teaching. Notably, its success isn’t driven by higher spending ($21,229 per student), as schools like Robert R. Gray ($29,055) and Seat Pleasant ($31,455) spend more but achieve far less, highlighting the power of the Montessori model and school culture.

Open Quote The school has to follow the Common Core because it is a county public school however, they do a great job continuing the Montessori curriculum at the same time! My daughter started in Pre-K 3 where they were a half day student, which is why they did not participate in all activities. They welcome me into the building whenever I want to volunteer, you just have to have the county required background check. They take the students on multiple field trips and provide a lot of wonderful experiences! My only concern is the communication between the school and parents. They do everything via Rallyhood and sometimes it is not the most effective way to communicate as well, sometimes the communication is sent out with very short notice for the parents.
My daughter loves it here! The school is preparing the students for high school and beyond. I am glad they have to incorporate the Common Core and the standards and expectations for the state curriculum because the county does not have a Montessori High School and therefore our students have to be able to adjust to the "regular" school life, which many students who come from Montessori struggle to do. They provide a good balance for our children! Close Quote

Open Quote Feels they could apply the Montessori approach more. The Pre-K children are excluded from special activities. (Field trips and some Fundraisers) There is a lack of enthusiasm to have parents in the classroom. Close Quote
