Summary

Bradbury Heights Elementary in Capitol Heights, MD, is a mid-sized PK-5 school within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, serving 354 students in a community with very high economic need, where over 94% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Academically, Bradbury Heights faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 5% of Maryland elementary schools over the past decade. The most pressing concern is in Mathematics, where only 3.2% of all students were proficient in the most recent school year—the lowest rate among all nearby schools and far below the district average of 13.7%. Alarmingly, 0% of 5th graders achieved math proficiency. The school shows a relative strength in English Language Arts, with 17.2% of students proficient, though this remains very low. Chronic absenteeism is a severe barrier, with rates hovering around 43.5%, well above the district average of 30.2%. Despite these struggles, the school maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 10.9:1 and spends a substantial $27,594 per student, which is higher than many nearby schools, including the high-performing Capitol Heights Elementary just over a mile away.

An interesting comparison is with Capitol Heights Elementary, which achieves 46.5% math proficiency and 68.1% ELA proficiency, earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the top 21% of the state. This stark contrast, despite both schools being in the same district and community, highlights that factors like lower poverty rates and much lower chronic absenteeism (23.3% at Capitol Heights) can drive success. Bradbury Heights' performance has also declined after a brief post-pandemic peak, suggesting that while resources are in place, the school must focus on improving attendance and fundamentally rethinking its math instruction to reverse its current trajectory.

Open Quote My daughter went here for one year. I was impressed by her Pre-K teacher. She was awesome. This school could use some improvements. Given that this is the new principal's first year give it time to improve. I liked the events the school put on and we were always given plenty of notice. Close Quote
