Summary

Suitland High in Suitland, MD, is a large comprehensive high school serving 1,847 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where 94.69% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

The most pressing challenge at Suitland High is its extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 56.2%, which is nearly double the district average of 30.2% and significantly higher than nearby schools like Largo High (35.6%) and Oxon Hill High (35.4%). This absenteeism directly impacts academic performance, particularly in math, where only 3.9% of students were proficient in 2024-2025—a dramatic drop from the previous year and far below the state average of 27.1%. In contrast, English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency is stronger at 33.5%, suggesting the school has more effective literacy instruction. The graduation rate has been volatile, recently rising to 76.7%, but still lags behind the district average of 78.9% and is much lower than Largo High's 90.9%.

Interestingly, Suitland High's per-student spending of $21,395 is higher than some better-performing nearby schools, such as Oxon Hill High ($18,429) and Largo High ($20,217), indicating that funding alone is not the issue. The nearby Academy of Health Sciences at PGCC, a magnet school with a 5-star rating and 100% ELA proficiency, highlights the stark educational inequities within the district. Without a major, targeted intervention to improve attendance, Suitland High's academic challenges are likely to persist.

Open Quote This is the worst school in Prince Georges County. The teachers or the admin seem to care much about the children. They want to tell you how many children are in the school and that they can't keep them all safe. My daughter was bullied in school back in December. She filled out a bully report but NOTHING was done because there was not enough information according to Mrs Stuart 10Th grade admin. When i asked why did she not gather more info she said it was not her job to chase behind the over 2000 students. Close Quote
