Summary

Wayside Elementary in Potomac, MD, is a consistently top-ranked school serving 465 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district.

Wayside stands out for its decade-long track record of ranking in the top 1% of all elementary schools in Maryland, a level of consistency that is unmatched by most nearby peers. While Cold Spring Elementary (ranked #1 in the state) posts slightly higher test scores, Wayside offers a more personalized learning environment with a lower student-to-teacher ratio of 13.2:1 compared to Cold Spring's 16.5:1. The school also demonstrates exceptional balance across subjects and grades, with no significant weaknesses—its lowest proficiency rate in any subject for 2025-2026 was 73.3% (5th-grade math), which is still nearly 2.5 times the state average. This suggests a highly effective, school-wide instructional approach that benefits all students, not just specific cohorts.

Wayside also excels at serving all student populations equitably, ranking in the top 20 in the state for female, male, White, and Asian students—a rare feat that indicates the school is closing achievement gaps. The school invests more per pupil ($21,468) than nearby schools like Beverly Farms Elementary ($17,897) and Potomac Elementary ($17,815), which correlates with its lower class sizes and strong outcomes. One area to watch is chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 6.3% to 10.2% over the past few years, though it remains well below the district average of 22.6%. Overall, Wayside offers a compelling package of elite academics, equity, and a supportive learning environment.

Open Quote My son went to a pep program in that school. Teachers and assistants were so great to him. He learned so much and never cried her to g on the bus. He will continue to attend this school for another couple of years I was told. I really liked how well he was treated. It has been a great experience for him so it has been for us his parents as well. Close Quote
