Summary

Lakewood Elementary is a high-performing public elementary school in Rockville, Maryland, serving 439 students in grades K-5. Part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, Lakewood has consistently ranked among the top 5% of elementary schools in the state, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood's academic performance is exceptional, with 68% of students proficient or better in Mathematics and 73.6% proficient or better in English Language Arts (ELA) - significantly outpacing the district and state averages. The school's strong performance extends to specific student subgroups, such as female students and English Language Learners, who rank among the top in the state. While Lakewood's chronic absenteeism rate is higher than nearby schools like DuFief Elementary and Rosemont Elementary, it remains within a reasonable range for an elementary school.

Lakewood's success may be attributed to its higher spending per student compared to the state and district averages, as well as factors beyond just district-level policies, such as school-specific leadership, teaching practices, and community engagement. The school's performance relative to nearby schools, like the highly-ranked Cold Spring Elementary, highlights the importance of these school-specific factors in driving student achievement.

Open Quote The most remarkable comment about this school will be "POOR ACADEMIC PROGRAM". Unfortunately, it seems they believe they are doing something extra-ordinary. Kids do not learn, teachers do not care, there is no follow-up. Parent -teacher communication consists of weekly newsletters and just one meeting during whole year.
My son attended this school at 2nd grade, coming from a foreign country. I heard poor things about American education system, but I wasn't expecting this poor. Lakewood was a schoolwith high ranking and this was the reason for us to chose this area to live. It is a total dispappointment. We are about to come to the end of the school year and my son is much behind where he was last year.
The homework (especially the optional ones) make me feel the teachers expect parents teach their kids.
You can not get proper feed back about the performance of your child in class. You receive report cards with an awkward marking system (this is the problem in whole MD). As you read it you understand that marking is done by someone really confused. Close Quote
