Summary

Strathmore Elementary in Silver Spring, MD, serves 464 students in grades 3 through 5 within the Montgomery County Public Schools district, and is a mid-sized school where 73.49% of students receive free or reduced-price meals, reflecting a high-poverty community.

Academically, Strathmore’s proficiency rates in Math (30.1%) and English Language Arts (39%) are below the district averages, but this performance is consistent with nearby peers like Wheaton Woods Elementary and Glenallan Elementary, and notably better than lower-performing schools such as Sargent Shriver Elementary and Georgian Forest Elementary. A standout strength is the school’s effectiveness with African American students, ranking in the 76th percentile statewide—a stark contrast to its overall performance. However, chronic absenteeism is a persistent challenge, with a rate of 24.8% in the 2024-2025 school year, higher than the district’s 22.6% and significantly above higher-performing neighbors like Rock Creek Valley Elementary (15.9%) and Flower Valley Elementary (16.0%).

Strathmore’s unique grade configuration (3-5) creates a strong feeder relationship with nearby Bel Pre Elementary (PK-2), meaning the school’s challenges are likely influenced by the foundation built there. A concerning trend is a “Math proficiency cliff,” where 3rd graders achieve 34.9% proficiency, dropping to 24.8% by 5th grade—a steeper decline than the district average. Despite high per-student spending ($21,092), outcomes remain below average, similar to other schools in the area like Brookhaven Elementary ($27,023) and Weller Road Elementary. The school’s proven success with African American students offers a potential blueprint for improving outcomes across all groups.

Open Quote As of this year I am very disappointed in Strathmore performance as a school in staff. I am so glad that this is my sons last year. They have did nothing to help are support my child. My concerns was ignored as a parent. It"s sad when a teacher has a personal issue with a student. Close Quote
