Summary

Argyle Middle in Silver Spring, MD, is a public school serving 868 students in grades 6-8 as part of the highly-ranked Montgomery County Public Schools district, with over 61% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch.

Argyle Middle presents a unique academic profile with a significant gap between subjects. While only 14.4% of students are proficient in math—far below the state average of 27.1% and much lower than nearby schools like Earle B. Wood Middle (28.9%) and Sligo Middle (25.4%)—the school performs relatively well in English Language Arts, with 40.7% proficiency. This is close to the state average and outperforms Odessa Shannon Middle (32.0%) and Francis Scott Key Middle (38.5%). Interestingly, students who take advanced math courses at Argyle perform competitively, with 34.8% proficient in Geometry—exceeding A. Mario Loiederman Middle (28.1%) and Francis Scott Key Middle (28.1%). The school also has a chronic absenteeism rate of 19.8%, which is higher than Briggs Chaney Middle (11.8%) and William H. Farquhar Middle (12.3%).

Despite its overall low state ranking, Argyle has shown a slight upward trend, moving from the 35th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 41st percentile in 2025-2026. The school's per-student spending of $18,501 is the lowest among its peer group, yet schools with higher spending like Odessa Shannon Middle ($22,692) and Newport Mill Middle ($22,585) have lower overall rankings. This suggests that Argyle's challenges are more about instructional strategies and student support than funding. While the school has been outpaced by Parkland Middle and Sligo Middle, which now sit in the 60th percentile, Argyle's ability to prepare select students for advanced coursework and its relative strength in ELA offer promising areas for growth.

Open Quote My daughter has been very happy at Argyle. They have a good range of technology classes available to students like Lights, Camera Literacy, Programming fundamentals, and Digital ARt. They have great free after school programs. I have found the faculty and staff to be highly invested in providing a quality education to all the student. Close Quote
