Summary

Somerset Elementary is a K-5 school in Chevy Chase, MD, serving 314 students within the Montgomery County Public Schools district, known for its strong academic reputation and commitment to serving a diverse student body.

Somerset consistently earns high ratings and ranks in the top 10% of Maryland elementary schools, but it stands out most for its exceptional results with Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students, ranking in the 98th and 88th percentiles statewide for these groups. This is a key differentiator from nearby elite schools like Wood Acres and Bannockburn, which rank in the top 1% but serve a more homogeneous population. Somerset’s per-student spending is notably higher—$21,975 compared to around $17,000 at those schools—reflecting the resources invested in its successful, equitable programs. While its test scores are well above state and district averages, they are typically 10-20 percentage points lower than its top-tier neighbors, creating a choice between a school that excels at value-add for a diverse community and one that achieves the highest raw scores.

A key challenge for Somerset is its chronic absenteeism rate, which has risen to 20.6%, far higher than nearby Chevy Chase Elementary (8.6%) and Wood Acres (6.7%). This trend may be linked to a slight decline in its state ranking from the 96th to the 91st percentile in recent years. Additionally, 5th-grade science proficiency (60.9%), while strong compared to state averages, lags behind peers like Chevy Chase Elementary (72.7%). For families seeking a diverse, inclusive, and highly effective learning environment, Somerset is an excellent choice, offering a continuous K-5 experience in a neighborhood of elite schools.

Open Quote Blatant racist bullying by the staff — they have ways to push minority and other unwanted families into pulling their kids out. Look at the playground and see for yourself: count how many minority kids there are in the lower grades and then compare with the upper grades. Where did the minority kids go? It’s been like this for many, many years. Close Quote

Open Quote Some talented teachers but a persistent bullying problem. Children of Chevy Chase Club members pick on middle class and racial minority kids. Principal punishes those who report bullying. Over three years eight kids we know transferred out due to bullying. We left too. Close Quote

Open Quote The school is not as a level of the taxes that we have paid since we lived in Montgomery county. The teacher will never respond to my e-mail and she is not nice to my son. You can barely speak wit principle or the teacher of the class. Two of my sons classmate had lice and we never received any notification and my son level reading and writing is not good with this class.

They don't even have a graduation party to kindergarten. I never heard of that even in prince George county. Close Quote
