Summary

Bannockburn Elementary in Bethesda, MD, is a consistently high-performing K-5 school within the Montgomery County Public Schools district, serving 446 students in an area known for academic excellence.

Bannockburn stands out for its remarkable consistency, ranking among the top 11 schools in Maryland for the past decade. Its English Language Arts (ELA) scores are exceptional, with 86.5% of students proficient in 2025-2026, a rate that surpasses nearby top schools like Seven Locks Elementary (85.5%) and is very close to Wood Acres Elementary (88.7%). A unique "Bannockburn Bump" occurs in 4th grade, where ELA proficiency actually increases from 3rd grade (84.5%) to 4th grade (88.3%), the opposite of the dip seen at many other schools. Science proficiency is also a standout, with 72.2% of 5th graders proficient, the highest among all nearby schools and far above the district average. While math scores are excellent overall (81.4%), there is a notable dip in 4th grade (76%) compared to 3rd grade (91.4%), a trend more pronounced than at peers like Carderock Springs Elementary.

Bannockburn achieves these top-tier results with efficient resource use. Its per-student spending ($16,919) is above the district average but lower than several nearby schools, such as Somerset Elementary ($21,975) and Burning Tree Elementary ($19,728), yet it consistently outperforms many of them in state rankings. The school also benefits from a strong attendance culture, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 9.8%, dramatically lower than the district average of 22.6%. This combination of sustained academic excellence, standout performance in ELA and science, and efficient use of resources makes Bannockburn a highly desirable and effective elementary school.

Open Quote Kids get a terrific education at this close knit neighborhood school. Unfortunately the principal lies to parents' faces in an attempt to quell concerns they may have. His deceptiveness is a huge negative and will over time make him many enemies... both parents and teachers. He discourages teachers from going the extra mile for their kids and drove away one of the best teachers in the school. Close Quote

Open Quote In the time that my kids have been at Bannockburn, there has been a lot of turnover of teachers and principals. Some have been excellent, others probably need time to get there. My most recent interaction with the new principal leaves me with the sense that he is a very nice person and will promise things to reassure you, but not follow up on them. It's been frustrating.
