Summary

Rosemont Elementary in Gaithersburg, MD, is a mid-sized school serving 564 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the highly-rated Montgomery County Public Schools district, with nearly 60% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. This school stands out for its exceptional work with students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the top 20% of all Maryland schools for effectively educating this demographic—a remarkable achievement that far exceeds its overall performance. Rosemont also shows strong math scores, with 35.3% proficiency in 2025-2026, nearly matching the district average and far surpassing nearby schools like Summit Hall Elementary (17.1%) and South Lake Elementary (14.7%).

However, the school faces significant challenges. Chronic absenteeism is a critical issue, with 29.4% of students missing too many days in 2024-2025, compared to the district average of 22.6%, which likely holds back test scores. Science is another weak spot—only 21% of 5th graders were proficient in 2025-2026, roughly half the district average of 40.1%. Despite high per-student spending of $23,797, which is more than higher-performing College Gardens Elementary ($20,890), Rosemont hasn't yet translated this investment into top-tier overall results, though the funding likely supports its large low-income population.

Rosemont serves as a stable "middle ground" option in a neighborhood with extreme highs and lows—nearby schools range from Candlewood Elementary (79th percentile) to Gaithersburg Elementary (9th percentile). The school's ranking has climbed steadily from a pandemic-era low of the 37th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 50th percentile in 2025-2026, showing resilience and a positive trajectory. For parents, Rosemont offers a school that excels with diverse learners and is on an upward path, despite needing to address attendance and science instruction.

Open Quote My son who is 4 y/o autistic child going to CAPP program at Rosemont ES. He went missing twice under the care of Rosemont’s staff. One time in the cafeteria, they later found him in the opposite side of the building.

Then second time was at dismissal, he walked off the bus and wandered around the neighborhood. Luckily, a parent found him and brought him back to school.

Please note that he is a 4y/o autistic child who is unable to communicate.

Worst of all, the accountability level is none. The case manager informed me that since he was handed to the bus driver, it is not longer the school’s responsibility. How irresponsible is that if my son is still under their care and the bus parked right in front of the school?

Please alert the community. I hope it won’t happen to another child. Close Quote
