Summary

Logan Elementary is a PK-5 school in the Baltimore County Public Schools district, serving 556 students in the Dundalk area of Baltimore, MD, where over 73% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. A standout bright spot is the school's mathematics performance: with a 24.9% proficiency rate, Logan actually surpasses the district average (21.9%) and nearly matches the state average (27.1%), outperforming nearby schools like Bear Creek Elementary (18.5%), Battle Grove Elementary (18.1%), and Dundalk Elementary (12.4%). However, English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency lags significantly at 32.7%, well below the district (46.1%) and state (51.7%) averages, creating a notable gap between math and reading scores that is less pronounced at high-performing neighbor Charlesmont Elementary.

A critical internal concern is a dramatic drop in math proficiency between 4th and 5th grade: 4th graders achieved a strong 36.2% proficiency rate, but 5th graders plummeted to just 9.5%—the lowest 5th-grade math score among all nearby Baltimore County schools and far below the district (27.9%) and state (30.2%) averages. This suggests a potential issue with the 5th-grade math curriculum or instruction. Additionally, chronic absenteeism remains a persistent challenge at 28.7% (2024-2025), higher than the district average (25.6%) and significantly above Charlesmont's 16.3%, which likely contributes to the school's overall academic struggles, particularly in ELA.

Despite these challenges, Logan is on a positive trajectory, improving from the 13th percentile statewide in 2021-2022 to the 31st percentile in 2025-2026, with math proficiency rising from 14.8% to 24.9% over the same period. The school spends a relatively high $20,801 per student (2023-2024), more than Grange Elementary ($17,253) but similar to Charlesmont ($21,255), which outperforms Logan in nearly every metric. This suggests that while spending is high, it may not be as effectively converted into academic outcomes as it could be. The school appears to be on an encouraging path, but the persistent ELA gap and the severe 5th-grade math drop-off are critical areas needing immediate attention to sustain this momentum.

Open Quote This school is small with great teachers. I can name a large amount of staff who took time and energy to not only teach my son but get to know him as an individual. He has been there from kindergarten and will be graduating in a few months. I also attended this school when i was young and they added so many programs and computers within to make each student find their creative side. I'm very thankful for where he started and excited to where he will be going. Close Quote
