Summary

Morrell Park Elementary/Middle is a PK-8 school in southwest Baltimore serving 451 students, where over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and it is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district.

The school’s most notable strength is in 3rd-grade math, where 45.5% of students were proficient—nearly double the district average and even surpassing the state average. This is a bright spot compared to nearby schools like Riverview Elementary and Lansdowne Elementary in Baltimore County, which have lower proficiency rates in this grade. However, this success drops sharply in 4th grade, where proficiency falls to just 9.3%, and by 8th grade, 0% of students are proficient in math. This pattern suggests that while early math instruction is effective, the school struggles to sustain those gains in later grades. Additionally, chronic absenteeism is a severe issue, with 47.8% of students missing 10% or more of the school year—far higher than the 27.8% rate at the higher-performing Lakeland Elementary/Middle.

Despite spending $24,243 per student—more than nearby schools like Riverview Elementary ($18,784) and Lansdowne Elementary ($18,350)—academic outcomes remain below state averages. The school’s overall math proficiency is just 13.1%, and 8th-grade ELA proficiency is only 20.4%. This indicates that the challenge is not a lack of resources but how they are used to address systemic issues like high absenteeism and a steep academic decline after 3rd grade. For parents, this school offers a strong start in early math but faces significant hurdles in maintaining progress through middle school.

Open Quote The school itself needs repairs especially in the girls bathrooms. The principle is fair. I have to give prop's to Mrs.Barb the nurse, and Mrs. Purnell I love them both. The teachers my children have had over the past 3 years are good teachers. I gotta give all the teachers that work in Baltimore City the credit they deserve. I've seen how kids act in school the disrespect they give to school employees. You couldn't pay me enough to be a teacher. So to all the teachers that work in the school system my heart goes out to you. Every teacher I've had the pleasure of inter acting with over the years thank you for doing your best to teach all the children. Thank you for reaching out to me when my children did good and when they didn't do so good. Close Quote
