Southwest Baltimore Charter School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Baltimore City Public Schools district, with 373 students located in the Southwest Baltimore area. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Southwest Baltimore Charter School over the past several years, receiving a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Southwest Baltimore Charter School significantly underperforms compared to the Baltimore City Public Schools district and the state of Maryland on standardized tests, with only 5.5% of students proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics and 20% proficient or better in MCAP English Language Arts. The school also faces extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 47.0% to 58.1% over the past few years, much higher than the district and state averages.

This suggests that the educational landscape in the area faces significant socioeconomic and community-level challenges that may be impacting student learning and engagement.

Open Quote Southwest may not be outperforming other schools yet, but it has a deeply committed staff, a caring community, and engaged, happy students who are taught not just to perform on tests but to think for themselves, to be good people, and to make a difference in their communities. Learning is built around long term projects that make learning skills feel important and relevant to students' lives. Close Quote

Open Quote The rankings don't do this charter school justice. Just recently, SBCS assumed a failing school, which helps to account for how it's doing. They've got a lot of work to do to help even out the playing field. The teachers and staff are excellent though, and I've been impressed by the amount of progress they've made in procuring grants and funds to improve the school, connecting themselves to other fantastic programs, and also impressed by the rigor of their expeditionary learning.

I've got two kids with very different needs - one is a hyperlexic learning sponge, who was doing fourth grade math and reading in first grade. The second is very much-so a typical student who gets frustrated easily. Both children, despite their very different needs, are being well taken care of.

The PTO is doing well. They're also hosting more and more afterschool activities, which my kids participate in.

I'm a happy parent. I love SBCS. Close Quote
