Summary

Leith Walk Elementary/Middle is a large Pre-K through 8th grade school in the Baltimore City Public Schools district, serving 910 students in a high-poverty area where over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Leith Walk faces significant challenges, with only 5.4% of students proficient in Math and 24.3% in English Language Arts overall. This places it as the lowest-performing school among its immediate city peers, such as Northwood Elementary (20.1% Math, 35.2% ELA) and Govans Elementary (19% Math, 34.7% ELA). The contrast is even starker when compared to nearby Rodgers Forge Elementary in Baltimore County Public Schools, which achieves 81.9% Math and 88.1% ELA proficiency. However, there is a bright spot: Leith Walk’s 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rate of 32.9% actually exceeds the district average, suggesting a potential strength in early literacy instruction. The school also has a relatively lower chronic absenteeism rate of 30.2%, which is the best among its city peer group and significantly better than the district average of 46.4%.

The most concerning trend is a dramatic drop in performance as students enter middle school. By 8th grade, proficiency rates fall to just 2.5% in Math and 12.6% in ELA, a much steeper decline than at similar schools like Garrett Heights Elementary/Middle. This "middle school cliff" suggests that while early literacy gains are promising, they are not being sustained. Interestingly, the nearby Tunbridge Public Charter School, serving a similar demographic, achieves dramatically better results (60% ELA, 31.7% Math), offering a potential model for improvement. Despite spending $21,336 per student—higher than the state average—Leith Walk’s outcomes remain low, highlighting the complex challenges facing high-poverty urban schools.

Open Quote We might not have the highest scores but we do have a bond that can't be broken we are all smart and full of potential. We treat each other like family no matter what you see or hear if you spend a day at Leith Walk you will be shocked at how dramatic all those comments were. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter missed the entire week of March 18th due to the flu. I know It is not required but to a child it would have been nice if any of her teachers had called to see if everything was ok. I’m questioning if they even noticed because I did not even get one absent phone call the entire week in which the calls usually come at 6:30pm. I did in fact get a call today 3/25/19 at 6:33pm alerting me that my daughter wasn’t in school when she was! I don’t know what kind of screwed up system that is but it needs to be fixed. I asked my child if her teacher, Ms. Long, even asked her where she has been or even express concern that she had been absent and she told me that “No one said anything about it.” It makes me angry as a parent that teachers don’t give a care about their students anymore. I have also been trying to get an IEP for my son since Sept. He has a 504 plan which does nothing to help. He has focus issues and I have asked almost each one of his teachers to inquire about the status of the IEP and I have also called multiple time to find out and every time I was transferred to a voicemail box that was not set up. This is ridiculous!!! It will be well into summer when maybe we will get a meeting. I am Very DISPLEASED with Leith Elementary. I attended Leith Walk and it’s definitely not the same. Maybe new staff should be on the agenda!! Close Quote

Open Quote The state needs to take over this school. It was once a top school in Baltimore. It was a hidden gem. There is no discipline or accountability for unruly students. As a parent I have noticed all the good teachers leave, why, because they can't teach. Close Quote
