Summary

Curtis Bay Elementary is a public elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, serving 464 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 25 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Curtis Bay Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 48.7% to 68.8% over the past few years, which is much higher than the state average. The school's test scores in Mathematics and English Language Arts are also consistently lower than the state and Baltimore City Public Schools averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 17.7% of students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 26.5% statewide and 12.6% in the district. The school's performance in Science is also significantly lower than the state and district averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Arundel Elementary, Maree Garnett Farring Elementary/Middle, and Bay-Brook Elementary/Middle, also face similar challenges with low test scores and high chronic absenteeism. However, some nearby schools, like Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle, perform significantly better academically, with much higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that the challenges facing Curtis Bay Elementary may be more complex than just funding or resources, and may require a more comprehensive approach to address the root causes of the school's underperformance.

Open Quote I have an autistic 5th grader currently enrolled in this school. When we moved here three years ago, I originally had misgivings about enrolling him here--his last school (Maree Farring, #203) had recommended institutionalizing him, and I expected the same from CBEMS. Three years after starting there, he is now reading at his grade level, and doing grade level math at 75% accuracy, his teacher Ms. Amberger writes 'a joy to teach' on his progress reports and has strenuously objected to his prior classification at his previous school as a candidate for institutionalization. Although I no longer work in the area, I have elected to deal with a 2 hour commute to work rather than relocate and remove my son from this school. Close Quote
