Summary

Monarch Academy is a K-8 public charter school in Glen Burnie, MD, serving 687 students within the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district. This school stands out for its exceptional English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 57.6% of students proficient—surpassing both the district (55.9%) and state (51.7%) averages. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Park Elementary (30.2% proficient) and Brooklyn Park Elementary (19.4% proficient). The school also excels in advanced math, with 63.6% of middle school students proficient in Algebra I—nearly three times the district average of 26.3%.

Monarch Academy has a significantly lower chronic absenteeism rate of 12.9%, compared to the district average of 19.9% and rates at nearby schools like Glendale Elementary (21.9%) and North Glen Elementary (26.3%). The school serves a more economically diverse student body, with 38% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch—a lower rate than many surrounding elementary schools. Despite having a higher student-to-teacher ratio (14.1) than most nearby schools, Monarch Academy achieves superior academic outcomes, particularly in ELA and advanced math.

However, the school shows a clear academic dichotomy: while it excels in ELA and advanced math, on-grade-level math proficiency is a weakness, with only 24% of all students proficient—below the district (29.3%) and state (27.1%) averages. This gap is most pronounced in middle school grades, where only 10.4% of 6th graders are proficient in standard math. The K-8 structure appears to be an advantage, creating continuity that benefits students, especially in ELA. Compared to Bay-Brook Elementary/Middle in Baltimore City Public Schools, which has a 55.4% chronic absenteeism rate and far lower proficiency rates, Monarch Academy demonstrates that effective leadership and instructional practices—not just the K-8 model—drive its success.

Open Quote Not what it should be. Great concept! Great idea! Poor administration and vision. Close Quote

Open Quote School has dropped significantly in its success due to the lack of a decent administration. The principal will delegate just about everything and doesn't communicate well with her faculty. Students show little or no respect for the staff, but that does seem o to both ways. Group punishment is a standard from many staff. Close Quote

Open Quote There are about 20-24 kids per class in each grade level. Each teacher has a TA and each of my kids, I have 3, LOVE their teachers and their TAs. The uniforms are great, the hallways are very stimulating to the mind because every hallway is a different theme, throughout the entire school. The kids get a lot of attention from their teachers and they learn a lot of REAL WORLD tasks. I love the way this school gives their full attention in teaching the children and expanding their possibilities. Close Quote
