Summary

Marley Elementary in Glen Burnie, MD, is a mid-sized school serving 618 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district, located in a community where over 71% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

The most significant challenge facing Marley Elementary is its exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate of 29.3%, which is nearly 50% higher than the district average of 19.9% and dramatically higher than nearby Pasadena Elementary (12.5%). This persistent issue, which has ranged from 23% to 34% over the last five years, is a major barrier to academic success. While math scores have shown improvement, rising from 17.3% to 25.7% proficiency, English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency remains a critical concern. Only 38.4% of Marley students are proficient in ELA, compared to the district average of 55.9% and the state average of 51.7%. This gap is the largest ELA deficit among all nearby schools, and even schools with similar or higher poverty rates, like Woodside Elementary (41.4%) and Glen Burnie Park Elementary (41.6%), outperform Marley in this subject.

Interestingly, Marley shows a notable strength in serving its Hispanic student population, who ranked in the 75th percentile statewide in 2020-2021, a stark contrast to the school's overall performance. A compelling comparison is with Freetown Elementary, located just 0.9 miles away. Despite having a similar poverty rate (72%) and an even higher chronic absenteeism rate (35.7%), Freetown outperforms Marley in both math (27.6% vs. 25.7%) and ELA (42.5% vs. 38.4%). This suggests that Freetown may have implemented more effective in-school strategies to mitigate the impact of absenteeism and poverty, making it a valuable model for Marley to study. While per-student spending at Marley ($17,745) is lower than some high-performing peers like Pasadena Elementary ($23,007), it is comparable to Southgate Elementary ($18,277), which also outperforms Marley in ELA, indicating that resource allocation, not just total spending, is key.

Open Quote I have a special needs child who attended this school between 2013-2016. They withheld services that he was entitled to from him for YEARS! My son was physically assaulted on numerous occasions, and they did absolutely nothing to protect him. The administration resorted to blaming the altercations on "missed social cues" despite videos showing otherwise. The administration is clearly incompetent. Avoid this school at all costs.
