On the 2025–2026 MCAS Next Generation tests, 26.4% of students were proficient in English language arts, 37.35% in math, and 36.89% in science, all below the state's 40.03% ELA, 41.11% math, and 40.98% science. Compared with the West Bridgewater district overall, Howard is below in ELA and math but above in science, though the district's all-grade figures include grades Howard does not serve.

Math is Howard's relative strength: its 37.35% is second only to Easton Middle School (63.19%) among nearby schools, and ahead of Edward J. O'Donoghue Middle School (36.39%), Whitman Middle (30.26%), Raynham Middle School (32.92%), and every Brockton middle school. Science is similarly above several neighbors. ELA is the clear weak spot: 26.4% is 13.63 points below the state and trails Ashfield Middle School, North Middle School, Raynham, O'Donoghue, Whitman, and Easton. Keep in mind that Howard serves grades 4–6 while most neighbors serve 6–8; at the grades Howard actually serves, its results are close to — and slightly above — the district's grade 4–6 scores, but still below state averages.

The biggest concern is the trend. Howard's ELA proficiency fell from 41.25% in 2022–2023 to 26.4% in 2025–2026, math from 46.2% to 37.35%, and science from a 49.07% peak to 36.89%. In 2022–2023 the school was near or above the state in ELA and math; now it is below the state in all three subjects. Two other points to watch: Howard's student-teacher ratio of 17.1 in 2024–2025 is the highest among its neighbors, up from 15.4, and per-student spending of $13,814 (2020–2021) is moderate-to-low compared with surrounding districts. Overall, Howard is not at the bottom of its peer group — math and science hold up locally — but the ELA gap and multi-year decline are worth asking about.
