Eugene Wright Science and Technology Academy is a grades 5–8 middle school serving 436 students in Chelsea, MA, a city just north of Boston, and it is part of the Chelsea district. In 2025–2026 it ranked 387th of 478 Massachusetts middle schools — the 19th percentile, or 1 star — placing it in the bottom fifth of the state. That is still a long-term improvement: the school sat at the 4th–5th percentile in 2015–2016 and 2016–2017, peaked at the 27th percentile in 2022–2023, and has since leveled off around the 18th–21st percentile.

Wright's academics show a striking split by subject. It outperforms the Chelsea district average in English language arts (26.26% proficient vs. 17.98%), science (26.13% vs. 15.05%), and 8th-grade civics (25% vs. 14.12%). Math is the clear weak spot: only 11.68% of students were proficient, below the district's 21.96% and far below the state's 41.11%, and math has slid for four straight years from 19.81% in 2022–2023. Grade 6 is the toughest year, with 12.24% proficiency in ELA and just 5.10% in math, while grade 5 is the strongest.

Among the three Chelsea middle schools, Wright is the strongest: it beats Joseph A. Browne School and Clark Avenue School in ELA, science, and civics, though its math is essentially tied with Browne and below Clark. Nearby, Winthrop Middle School posts much higher proficiency despite spending less per student and having larger classes. Equity is the other concern — female students, English language learners, and special education students all rank in the bottom decile of statewide subgroup effectiveness.
