TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School is a statewide virtual public school serving grades K–12 from East Walpole, MA, with 2,969 students, making it much larger than the nearby brick-and-mortar alternative and charter schools in the comparison set.

For parents weighing this option, two structural facts stand out. TEC’s reported per-student spending was $10,564 in 2020–2021, the lowest among the listed peers, while its 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 20.7—improved from 24.6 in 2022–2023 but still higher than Brooke Charter School (12.4), Foxborough Regional Charter School (12.6), and Match Charter Public School (10.2). Because TEC is a statewide virtual school, “nearby” distance comparisons are less meaningful than for a brick-and-mortar school, and free/reduced-price lunch data were blank for TEC and nearby schools, so economic context could not be compared.

Outcomes show significant challenges. In 2024–2025, TEC’s graduation rate was 45.7% and dropout rate 34.2%, far weaker than Foxborough Regional Charter School (96.5% graduation, 2.3% dropout), Brooke Charter School (90.5%, 5.7%), and Match Charter Public School (82.5%, 7.9%); only Melvin H. King South End Academy had a higher dropout rate. On 2025–2026 MCAS, all-grades proficiency was ELA 25.39%, Math 20.89%, and Science 31.19%, below state averages (40.03%, 41.11%, 40.98%) but above several nearby alternatives in some subjects, including Foxborough Regional Charter School in all three. Math is the deepest gap. Bright spots include 8th grade Civics at 39.30% (essentially state level) and 8th grade Science, 8th grade ELA, 10th grade ELA, and 7th grade Math. Trends are mixed but mostly concerning: ELA fell from 38.88% in 2022–2023 to 25.39% in 2025–2026, graduation declined, and dropout rose; Civics improved from 28.20% to 39.30%.
