Summary

Pioneer Charter School of Science II (PCSS II) is a K–12 charter school at 97 Main Street in Saugus, MA, serving 621 students and operating as its own district, Pioneer Charter School of Science II (District). Although the state labels it an "Alternative" school, its size, grade span, and outcomes look much more like a comprehensive charter school.

Academics are strong, and math is the standout. In 2025–26 MCAS results, 75.93% of students met or exceeded expectations in math versus 41.11% statewide — the highest among nearby charters, including Pioneer Charter School of Science (68.55%), Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (66.15%), KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School (33.07%), and Prospect Hill Academy Charter School (25.45%). Tenth-grade math is especially striking at 93.44%, against a state rate of 43.73%. English language arts sits at 58.45% (state: 40.03%), slightly behind Mystic Valley and Pioneer but well ahead of KIPP Lynn and Prospect Hill. Science rose to 66.13% from 56.16% the year before, and 8th-grade civics (67.57%) leads the nearby charters. Biology, at 66.18%, is above the state but trails Pioneer and Mystic Valley, and 4th- and 5th-grade ELA (48.98%) is lower than the school's math results.

Graduation rates have been very high — 100.0%, 97.9%, and 97.6% before dipping to 93.2% in 2024–25, when the dropout rate rose from 0.0% to 2.3%. That is still a solid profile, though several nearby charters posted higher graduation and lower dropout rates. Class sizes are relatively small at 11.7 students per teacher, and per-student spending ($16,308 in 2020–21) is below KIPP Lynn and Prospect Hill while producing stronger math and science results. Nearby districts such as Boston, Peabody, Everett, and Chelsea rank well below this school's proficiency levels, though free/reduced-lunch data are not reported, so economic context cannot be compared.
