Summary

Henry Mayfield Elementary School in Slidell, LA, serves 749 students from Pre-K through 6th grade and is part of the highly-rated St. Tammany Parish school district, which holds a 4-star rating statewide.

Henry Mayfield stands out for its favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.9:1, which is lower than many nearby schools, including the high-performing LeBleu Settlement Elementary School (14.1:1) and Lake Charles Charter Academy (16.3:1). This suggests students may receive more individualized attention. Academically, the school performs on par with or slightly above state averages in math and English Language Arts, with 66% proficiency in math and 70% in ELA for the 2025-2026 school year. However, a persistent weakness is Social Studies, where only 49% of students are proficient—17 points below the district average. The school also faces challenges with chronic absenteeism, which has risen to 22.7%, though this is lower than several nearby schools with higher poverty rates, such as Brentwood Elementary School (38.2%) and Ralph F. Wilson Elementary School (38.0%).

While Henry Mayfield has shown recent improvement in serving its African American students, its effectiveness for White students and Special Education students has declined sharply. Support for Special Education students dropped from the 52nd percentile in 2023-2024 to the 28th percentile in 2025-2026, signaling a critical area for improvement. Overall, the school has experienced a recent dip in performance, falling from a 3-star rating in 2023-2024 to a 2-star rating in 2025-2026. Despite this, it outperforms many nearby schools with higher levels of economic disadvantage, such as T. H. Watkins Elementary School and Oak Park Elementary School, making it a solid choice for families seeking a balanced educational environment in the Slidell area.
