Ralph F. Wilson Elementary School

Public Grades 3-5
Summary

Ralph F. Wilson Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades 3-5 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with 103 students enrolled. The school is part of the Calcasieu Parish school district, which is ranked 33 out of 118 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Despite being part of a relatively high-performing district, Ralph F. Wilson Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of Louisiana elementary schools based on the SchoolDigger statewide ranking. The school's performance on LEAP tests is significantly below the Calcasieu Parish and Louisiana state averages across all grades and subjects. Additionally, Ralph F. Wilson Elementary has had chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 20-36% over the past few years, which is much higher than the district and state averages. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 77-93% over the past few years, significantly higher than nearby schools like T.S. Cooley Elementary Magnet, Westwood Elementary, and Combre-Fondel Elementary.

The combination of high poverty, high chronic absenteeism, and low academic achievement suggests that Ralph F. Wilson Elementary is facing significant challenges in providing a quality education to its students. Factors like lack of resources, high teacher turnover, and inadequate support services may be contributing to the school's struggles. Given the school's consistently low performance across multiple metrics, there appears to be a critical need for targeted interventions and support to address the root causes of the challenges facing Ralph F. Wilson Elementary. Strategies focused on improving attendance, providing additional academic and social-emotional support, and engaging the community may be necessary to turn the school around.

Open Quote Ralph Wilson is one of the most poorly managed schools that I have ever visited. The principal and office staff are constantly late to open up the school, and often times the students, teachers, and parents have to wait outside until staff arrives. The principal is ineffective in her managerial skill and not very cordial. More often than not she is condescending in her attitude towards staff and colleagues.

The greater majority of students come from underpriviledged backgrounds which is unfortunate. However, the principal is oblivious in a need to address these issues or the fact that student behavior is out of control.Leasdership is lacking at this school.Student behavior is off the chart out of control and the teachers are overwhelmed.

I would NEVER recommend this school for anything other than closure or new leadership. Close Quote
