Summary

South Fork Elementary School in Denham Springs, LA, serves 685 students in grades PK-5 within the highly-rated Livingston Parish school district, though it has experienced a significant decline in state ranking over the past decade, now sitting in the 42nd percentile.

One of the most notable aspects of South Fork is its high level of economic disadvantage, with 86% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. This is higher than nearby schools like Seventh Ward Elementary School (62%) and Juban Parc Elementary School (71%), yet it's important to note that high poverty doesn't have to dictate low performance. For example, Juban Parc, located just 3.14 miles away with a similar demographic, consistently ranks in the top 8% of the state (92nd percentile) with math and ELA proficiency rates in the high 80s. This stark contrast suggests that school-level factors like leadership and teaching quality can make a significant difference. South Fork's academic performance has been declining, with proficiency rates below the district average in all core subjects—math (60% vs. 73%), English language arts (67% vs. 81%), and social studies (49% vs. 65%).

On a positive note, South Fork has made remarkable progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 16.8% in 2020-2021 to 11.3% in 2024-2025, which is better than the district average of 13.3%. However, this improvement hasn't yet translated into higher academic scores, indicating deeper instructional challenges remain. Interestingly, Hispanic students at South Fork have performed relatively well, ranking in the 54th percentile statewide in 2025-2026, which is higher than the school's overall rank and the performance of other subgroups. Additionally, there may be a specific issue in 5th-grade math, where proficiency (65%) lags behind the district average (67%) and far behind high-performing peers like Seventh Ward (81%) and Lewis Vincent Elementary School (74%).

Open Quote My son has been going to this school since kindergarten. He has never got student of the week, month or year. He is not allowed to go to the bathroom when he needs to. He has had multiple accidents because they will not allow him to go to the restroom. this year he wore his costume for Halloween on Thursday for red ribbon week and was not allowed to wear his costume for "Trunk or Treat" or the costume contest. He is not allowed to go on field trips because we are unable to afford the school supply fee. I wish they would just go back to having a supply list. I feel like this school has some sore of vendetta against my child for some reason. One morning my child was not allowed to go to the restroom and he had an accident and they called me to bring him some more clothes and he said he was not allowed to go to the restroom. The woman in the office said he never asked. My child will not just say he needs to go to the restroom if he does not need to go. He was bullied at school this year and they waited until the end of the day to even call me Close Quote
