Summary

Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy is a large, public PK-12 school in Kenner, LA, serving 2,263 students within the Jefferson Parish school district. Despite being classified as an "Alternative" school and serving a predominantly low-income population (nearly 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch), Kenner Discovery is a high-performing outlier that consistently outperforms both its district and the state of Louisiana across nearly every academic metric.

This school is a standout for its exceptional academic performance and student engagement. In the 2025-2026 school year, proficiency rates in core subjects like Math (69%) and ELA (80%) are significantly higher than state averages (62% and 70%, respectively). This performance rivals that of elite nearby schools like Lycee Francais de la Nouvelle-Orleans (Math: 76%, ELA: 81%), which serves a much lower percentage of low-income students. Kenner Discovery also boasts an incredibly low chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.1%, far below the district (21.5%) and state (22.5%) averages, and even lower than the rate at Lycee Francais (17.9%). This indicates a highly engaged student body and a strong school culture.

Perhaps most impressive is the school's ability to ensure students cross the finish line. Kenner Discovery has a phenomenally high graduation rate of 94.6% and an incredibly low dropout rate of 0.2%, a stark contrast to the district's 77.0% graduation rate and 5.9% dropout rate. Nearby alternative schools like Dr. Martin Luther King Charter School for Sci Technical (55.6% grad rate) and Travis Hill School (12.0% grad rate) struggle immensely in this area. With a strong STEM-focused curriculum and a student-teacher ratio of 14.3:1, Kenner Discovery is a compelling example of a school that effectively overcomes socioeconomic barriers to drive student success.

Open Quote My children go to this school, so did my older children. The only thing I can say good about it is, at least I can help them learn when they get home, I get to spend a lot of time with them, teaching them the things they should have learned in class, but with the school being the way it is, they (my children) are more concerned with being picked on and/or bullied!!! As for the principal... YOU SHOULD BE FIRED!!! The Assistant Principal is a much more qualified and all-around better person for the job!!!! Close Quote

If you want your child to be put down by cafeteria staff and Principal.... GO TO MAGGIORE!
If you want to go where parents don't care about their children.... GO TO MAGGIORE!

The ONLY positive things are that MOST of the teachers there CARE! BUT due to Principal having the WORST people skills the teachers CANT provide a good and safe place for the children to learn. Don't try and reach out to the school board either... THEY DO NOT RETURN YOUR CALLS.

RUN AS FAR AS YOU CAN FROM THIS SCHOOL!!!!!!!! Close Quote
